Choosing a Yoga Studio: The 10-Minute Checklist
August 12, 2026 · 4 min read
The best studio isn't the most beautiful one — it's the one you still attend in February. Run any studio through this checklist before you buy a membership.
1. The friction test
If getting there takes more than about 15 minutes from home or work, attendance collapses — no matter how good the classes are. Check the schedule against your real week: are there classes at times you'll genuinely make, including a backup slot when your first choice fills up?
2. The teaching test
- Do they offer true beginner classes, or is 'all levels' code for 'keep up'?
- Do teachers offer options and props, or one rigid version of each pose?
- Can you read about the teachers before you go — their training and their style?
3. The vibe test
Visit once before committing. Notice whether regulars talk to newcomers, whether the teacher learns names, and how the room feels at the end of class — rushed out, or welcome to linger. Community is the single best predictor of a practice that lasts.
4. The money test
Take the intro offer before any membership. Then do the honest math: classes per week you'll really attend, times four. If a membership beats packs at that number, join. If not, packs keep you free to split time between two studios — which many students end up preferring.
Filter studios by city and style, see photos, typical prices and online options — then visit the two that pass your checklist.
