Extended Left Hand to Big Toe Pose
Utthita Hasta Pādāṅguṣṭhāsana
A powerful standing balance that lengthens the hamstrings, tones the core, and builds unwavering single-leg stability and concentration.
Utthita Hasta Pādāṅguṣṭhāsana translates from Sanskrit as Extended Hand-to-Big-Toe Pose, joining utthita (extended), hasta (hand), and pādāṅguṣṭha (big toe). This foundational posture appears early in standing sequences across Hatha, Iyengar, and Ashtanga traditions as an essential test of poise. It challenges the practitioner to ground the standing foot while extending the opposite leg forward with an upright, spacious spine.

Targets
Hamstrings, Hip flexors, Core stabilizers, Gluteal muscles, Calves and ankles
Good for
building single-leg stability, lengthening tight hamstrings, improving mental focus and balance
Breath
Inhale to lengthen your spine and lift your knee, then exhale smoothly as you extend the leg forward while keeping the breath steady and unhurried.
How to do Extended Left Hand to Big Toe Pose
- 1Stand tall in Mountain Pose, shifting your weight firmly into your right foot and rooting through all four corners.
- 2Place your right hand onto your right hip to help gauge pelvic levelness and draw your left knee up toward your chest.
- 3Hook the big toe of your left foot using the yogic peace-sign grip with your left index finger, middle finger, and thumb.
- 4Engage your core, lift through your sternum, and begin to extend your left leg forward without locking either knee.
- 5Draw your left shoulder blade back into your upper spine to prevent your chest and shoulders from rounding forward.
- 6Press down through the left hip crease to keep your pelvis square and level with the mat.
- 7Fix your steady gaze on an unmoving point at eye level and hold for five deep, controlled breaths before lowering smoothly.
Benefits
- Stretches and lengthens the hamstrings and calf muscles of the lifted leg.
- Strengthens the ankle, foot, and quadriceps of the standing leg.
- Activates deep core and hip flexor musculature to sustain single-leg elevation.
- Refines vestibular balance, joint proprioception, and mental focus.
- Encourages upright posture by counteracting habitual slouching through the chest and back.
Common mistakes and cues
Rounding the spine
Hunching forward to reach the toe compresses the chest; keep the spine tall and bend the lifted knee if needed.
Hiking the lifted hip
Lifting the left hip tilts the pelvis unevenly; consciously draw the left hip crease down to keep the hips level.
Hyperextending the standing knee
Locking the standing joint strains connective tissue; maintain a subtle micro-bend to keep stabilizing muscles engaged.
Yanking on the toe
Pulling forcefully on the big toe strains the shoulder and foot; use your hip flexors and core to lift the leg.
Modifications and props
Use a yoga strap
Loop a strap around the ball of your left foot and hold the strap with your left hand to keep your spine long.
Hold the bent knee
Clasp your left shin or under the thigh instead of the big toe if your hamstrings are tight.
Wall support
Rest your right hand lightly against a wall for balance while holding the lifted toe or strap.
Rest foot on a chair
Place your extended left heel on the seat of a sturdy chair to work on alignment without bearing full leg weight.
Cautions
Hamstring or groin tear
Avoid forcing the lifted leg straight if you have an acute hamstring origin injury or groin strain.
Low back irritation
Keep the spine tall and bend the lifted leg to prevent lumbar rounding that can irritate discs.
Balance instability
Practice with a hand on a wall or sturdy chair if you experience vertigo or inner ear issues.
If you are working with an injury, pregnancy or a medical condition, check with a qualified professional before practising this pose.
