How breathing actually changes your nervous system

Teachers say breathing calms you down. Here is the mechanism, which is more interesting than the slogan.

Two settings, one dial

Your autonomic nervous system has a mobilising branch (sympathetic) and a settling branch (parasympathetic). Breathing is the only part of that system you can operate on purpose — which makes it a manual dial on a mostly automatic machine.

Why the exhale matters more

Heart rate rises slightly on the inhale and falls on the exhale. Make exhales longer than inhales and you tilt the average toward the settling side. That is the whole trick behind four-in, six-out and behind the long sighs at the end of a restorative class.

The vagus nerve

Slow breathing stimulates the vagus nerve, which carries signals from your organs to your brain and back. More vagal activity generally shows up as higher heart rate variability, which is associated with better recovery and stress tolerance.

What this means for practice

  • A flowing class trains you to keep a steady breath while working hard — that is the transferable skill.
  • Yin and restorative classes are long-exhale practices dressed as stretching.
  • If your breath is ragged in a pose, the pose is too much today. That is useful information, not a verdict.

Nasal breathing warms and filters air, slows the breath naturally and adds resistance, which helps keep the pace steady during movement.
Does slow breathing lower blood pressure?
Slow-paced breathing has been shown to produce small short-term reductions. It is a helpful habit, not a replacement for prescribed treatment.
